THE UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC

In 2006, Bologna was honored as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, celebrating its rich musical heritage and thriving contemporary music scene. Music is deeply ingrained in the identity of Bologna and plays a pivotal role in the region’s economic development. This is further exemplified by Emilia Romagna, the first region in Italy to pass the Law on Music (L.r. 2/2018) in 2018. The legislation aims to fortify the regional music industry, foster innovation, and create entrepreneurial and employment opportunities.

CHA takes center stage in the vibrant music landscape of the Emilia-Romagna Region, which ranks second in Italy for the number of concerts, with 4,106 performances. Additionally, it holds the fourth position in terms of audience size and spending, with 1,046,412 attendees and a revenue exceeding 25 million euros (SIAE 2018 data).

The UNESCO designation acknowledges the region’s diverse music production and consumption, including internationally renowned festivals and continuous cultural engagement. From classical music seasons to contemporary compositions, live jazz performances, family-friendly events, and the presence of renowned songwriters and rock bands, the region offers a distinctive and unparalleled musical panorama.
